Assam Don Bosco University has the rare privilege of partnering with IIT Mumbai for their Spoken Tutorial Workshop. The first of the series of on-line certificate program which started, Monday 5th August, saw the presence of the Vice-Chancellor, Pro-Vice Chancellor, Registrar and several faculty members from MCA & CSE departments.
“This is a two hour programme during which IIT Mumbai’s Learn Java Using Spoken Tutorial – talk to a teacher – an MHRD (Ministry of Human Resource Development) National Mission on Education through ICT is taught,” says Assistant Professor of Computer Science Vijay Prasad.
“It all started some five years ago when IIT Mumbai contacted us for this project,” says project initiator and ADBU Pro-Vice Chancellor Fr Joseph Nellanatt sitting at the computer lab with some 60 students, each at their own computer, awaiting a Skype link with Mumbai.
Students from MCA (Master of Computer Application) fifth semester and CSE (Computer Science Engineering) 7th semester eagerly pursued the two hour tutorial which will lead to an on-line hour-long test a week later.
“Anyone who scores 40% or above is eligible for an IIT Mumbai certificate for the completed course,” Prof. Vijay Prasad informs.
He adds, “We will be using 8 subjects from Spoken Tutorial’s Open Source including: Java, C/C++, Python, PHP+MySql, Scilab, Libro Office, Linux, and GIMP.
This Indian Government funded project, offered absolutely free, aims to popularize Open Source software and Spoken Tutorial where students have the benefit of learning from the masters.
