Assam Don Bosco University extends its heartiest congratulations to Prof. David R Syiemlieh for having been selected to receive India’s fourth highest civilian award Padma Shri for his contribution to Education and Literature. Prof. Syiemlieh has been serving as a member of Board of Management of Assam Don Bosco University since 1 February 2020.

Prof. Syiemlieh is a renowned historian and a distinguished academician. He has also received the Charles Wallace Grant for research in the UK, the India-France Cultural Exchange Grant for research in Paris, and the Senior Fulbright Fellowship for research in the US, where he was affiliated with Notre Dame University.
He had served as the Chairman of Union Public Service Commission, New Delhi; President of the North East India History Association, Pro Vice Chancellor of NEHU, Vice Chancellor of Rajiv Gandhi University, Itanagar. He was Honorary Director of the Indian Council of Social Science Research, North Eastern Regional Centre, Shillong; Member of the Indian Council of Historical Research, New Delhi and Member, Indian Council of Social Science Research, New Delhi.

Author of several books and articles on the history of North East India, he is credited with discovering the date of death and other details of the last days of Tirot Sing, the Khasi chief of Nongkhlaw who resisted British colonial expansion and locating the grave in Calcutta of Thomas Jones, the Welsh missionary who first arrived in the Khasi Hills.
