15th and 16th of July will remain indelible in the minds of quite a no. of students of DBCET, for it was during these two days that nearly 500 of them, in two batches had the opportunity of spending an entire day, being guided and supported in their efforts to develop themselves as dependable individuals, as they begin their technical and professional training for the academic year 2014-15.

The 15th saw third semester students of the civil and mechanical engineering enthusiastically participating in the student development programme whose principal theme was “Together towards excellence”. After an introductory session of fellowship and joy, they were introduced to the topic “Manage stress before stress manages you”, through an interactive session conducted by Ms. Sahiba and Neelam, faculty of the Psychology department of ADBU. In the second session of the day, Fr. Abhilash, former associate director of Don Bosco Institute, Guwahati, led the students through a journey that will lead them to excellence, the attitudes and behaviour patterns that can assure the students of excellence in their student and professional life.

The first session in the afternoon was devoted to the topic of social commitment, most relevant for the students especially in the context of their being more focussed on technology and related topics; besides, it served them as an introduction to the practical social involvement of DBCET in favour of the neighbourhood and the students of the villages in the vicinity of the college. The session was conducted by Victor Narzary of the MSW department, well versed and experienced in social commitment. Ms. Sontara then briefed the students on the correct understanding of the meaning, purpose and process of mentoring. This was very appropriate since the faculty of DBCET had an enriching day-long session on the topic in the week prior to this development programme. The third semester students of CSE, EEE and ECE had a similar programme on the 16th.
On the 15th July, the seventh semester students of the civil and computer science engineering had a full day programme on the theme “First steps towards the Corporate”, a very practical training session on the theoretical and practical aspects of resume preparation, group discussion, personal interview and aptitude test. The sessions were conducted by Shahnowaz Hussain, the very well experienced head of the Training and placement cell of DBCET, with the assistance of other faculty members. The seventh semester is already the launching pad for the students in this direction of placement. With the vast experience that Shahnowaz has in training and preparing the students for these four aspects that form the principal pillars of a successful journey towards a good placement, the students eagerly participated in the day’s programme. The seventh semester students of the EEE and ECE branches had a similar training programme on the 16th.

Similar student development programmes are on the schedule for the other students of B.Tech, M.Tech, MCA and of the social sciences on the 19th
